Four Years after Apple Was Supposed to Kill Them, Sonos Hits 1M Rooms

Wireless hifi system maker Sonos, best known for streaming music in multiple rooms, has hit 1M rooms worldwide, six years after shipping its first wireless music system and four years since the debut of the AppleTV -- which some called a Sonos-killer. In fact, except for AppleTV, Sonos plays well with pretty much every Apple product.

Sonos spokesperson Thomas Meyer tells LAUNCH that 55% of registrations are outside the United States. The number of Sonos households grew 110% year-over-year in 2010, and that number is on track for 105% year-over-year growth in 2011.

Last week, Santa Barbara-based Sonos announced a partnership with Chinese music service Duomi, its first music deal in China although the hardware launched there in November 2010.

The company has raised $65M total, with $25M from Index Ventures in March 2010.
